Reading their Scholastic Book (white paper book)
Every night your student’s homework is to read their Scholastic Book with you. Remember this is the ONLY way to treasure box. Every 5th book your student reads he/she will receive treasure box! The more your student reads and gets read too, the better you student will do in school. Research has shown that reading at home is essential to student’s success, reading 15-20 minutes a night is perfect.
During reading with your student:
Conduct a comprehension check by pausing and asking your student to
paraphrase what they just read.
Have the student predict what they might think will happen next in the story.
After reading with your student ask them the following questions to check for comprehension:
Start at the beginning and tell me what happened in the story. (Look for
details in which the student retells the main events.)
What happened after ____________________.
What happened before _______________________.
How did the story end?
Where was the setting of the story?
Who were the characters in the story?
What did this story make you think of?
